Netherlands Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan

Visit to Herat projects

A delegation from the Embassy of the Netherlands visited Herat city from 8 to 10 January 2017. The trip focused on visiting and discussing ongoing development activities with the implementing partners, including UN Habitat and Cordaid. Deputy Head of Mission Sharmila Bihari and the embassy’s gender coordinator met with Herat Provincial Women Network members, women shelter residents, UN Habitat staff, community members, municipality board members, as well as a young woman film maker and Wushu (sports) groups.

Some of our observations during the trip:

  • The majority of the supported programs’ beneficiaries confirmed that the programs brought positive changes in their lives;
  • Woman representatives of different districts as well community gender group members pointed out that they are more empowered and confident to speak up for the women’s rights and to help other women of the community in addressing their challenges;
  • UN Habitat supports 3750 households in district 13 of Herat through the Afghan Urban Peacebuilding Program. All the construction projects are designed in such a way that the community also contributes either in terms of money or human resources. The community contribution to some of the projects is above half of the total project budget;
  • Women members of both community councils and Gender Groups seemed proactively involved in management of the Community Development Councils as well as monitoring the construction projects.
